YG’s new girl group Babymonster debuts with trending single ‘Batter Up’

YG Entertainment introduced its new girl group, Babymonster, to the world on 26 November (27 November KST), and right away the group made an unforgettable first impression with its debut digital single, “Batter Up.”

The hip-hop-sounding “Batter Up” was co-written by Babymonster’s Ara, together with Jared Lee, Treasure’s Choi Hyun-Suk, Akmu’s Lee Chanhyuk, Where The Noise and Bigtone.

Less than a day since its release, “Batter Up” has garnered over 11 million views and is trending at number one on YouTube. The hashtag #BABYMONSTER_DEBUT_DAY also became a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter).

Babymonster — which consists of Ruka, Pharita, Asa, Rami, Rora, Chiquita and Ahyeon — previously released a pre-debut song in May titled “Dream.” According to their agency, Ahyeon was not able to join the group’s debut due to health reasons.

The meticulous selection process for the girl group was chronicled in an online survival show, Last Evaluation, featuring seven potential members. In December 2022, YG officially unveiled its newest girl group in a one-minute video titled “YG NEXT MOVEMENT” with special appearances by Jennie and Lisa of Blackpink, Winner, Akmu, dancer Leejung Lee and label founder Yang Hyun-suk.

Babymonster is YG Entertainment’s first girl group in seven years after Blackpink.
