With online dating now the norm for most people, DAILY TRIBUNE chatted with Juls and Maddie, two people who found love on Bumble, thanks to a digital Cupid’s arrow that brought their stories together.
Both had faced heartbreaks, but destiny had a surprise in store. Juls, 21, used a dating app in search of a meaningful connection. Maddie, 21, ventured into online dating out of pandemic-induced boredom. Little did they know that a simple swipe and a few exchanged messages on Bumble would change their lives forever.
They clicked right away when they finally met in person after communicating online for weeks. Their first date led to many more, and the pair quickly realized they had something extraordinary.
Now, two years later, Juls and Maddie continue to cherish their relationship. As they affectionately put it, they owe their love story to the online realm, “I swiped right in Bumble.”
Bumble is an online dating site where users can ‘swipe left’ to reject a match or ‘swipe right’ to show interest.
Maddie shared, “I never thought I’d meet the person I want to spend my lifetime with on an online dating app.”
Click to heartbreak
Not all online relationships lead to fairy-tale endings, however, as the DAILY TRIBUNE found out.
When they first linked on the well-known dating app Bumble, Kae, a 23-year-old law student, and Ashley, a 21-year-old Business Economics student, both created an intimate connection. Kae spent three months dating and making memories. But as time went on, things started to go wrong in the relationship.
Kae said, “Everything’s so surface level, and most of the time, it is your imagination running this whole relationship. You romanticize the person too much.”
She went on, “We were too intense for each other, and being in a relationship felt like we were going to ruin each other.”
After her story took an uncanny encounter, they made the decision to split up.
Meanwhile, Ashley, an Iskolar ng bayan, said, “Sa una lang usually consistent mga tao (People are consistent in the beginning.)You initially date because you like the characteristics posted by the person.”
She then added, “In online dating, breaking up is easy. People come and go.”

Ashley agreed, saying, “Don’t rush. Dating is not a race.” Maddie ended, “You don’t find love, love finds you. You cannot rush or force love. If it’s meant for you, things will fall into place naturally.”
