Still the kings: SB19 sweeps 8th PPOP Awards

P-Pop group SB19 emerged as the biggest winner at the eighth edition of the Philippine Pop Top (PPOP) Awards, held on 30 November at Rizal Park’s Open-Air Auditorium.

The free admission awards ceremony also became a memorable night of live music and thrilling performances from some of the country’s rising and established P-pop groups and singers — Calista, DIONE, 1st. One and more.

SB19’s awards haul totaled eight trophies, including the top prize, Top Global Artist of the Year, which they shared with fellow P-Pop groups HORI7ON and 4TH IMPACT.

The group’s chart-topping song ‘Gento’ won Video of the Year and Song of the Year, while their album ‘Pagtatag’ won Album of the Year.

The members also bagged individual awards: The Voice Generations Philippines coach Stell Ajero as Top Male Vocalist of the Year, Josh Cullen as Top New Artist of the Year, Pablo as Top Male Leader of the Year and Felip as Top Performing Artist of the Year.

All these mark back-to-back wins for the powerhouse group, as last year they also bagged multiple awards from the same awards-giving-body, including Pop Group of the Year, Pop Main Vocalist of the Year (Stell), Pop Main Visual of the Year (Justin), Pop Icon of the Year and Pop Song of the year for their hit song “WYAT.”

Despite these achievements, SB19 and its self-launched company, 1Z Entertainment, have been quiet on social media.

Speculations that the P-pop group may be in the process of rebranding began circulating last month when all five members removed “SB19” from their Instagram handles, reportedly due to copyright issues with their previous management company. Their dedicated fanbase, A’TIN, now refers to the five boys as “Mahalima.”

Dealing a further blow to fans, the group also announced the cancellation of their Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai shows, due to “unforeseen circumstances and following discussions with involved groups.”
