The Film Development Council of the Philippines, in partnership with ABS-CBN Film Restoration (Sagip Pelikula), will be featuring more digitally restored classic Filipino films beginning 20 October.

The films will be available for streaming on JuanFlix, FDCP’s streaming platform that showcases quality Filipino films to a global audience.

It will also present feature films from renowned and veteran filmmakers in the industry. This includes National Artists for Film Ishmael Bernal, Lino Brocka and Marilou Diaz-Abaya, alongside multi-award-winning filmmakers Jeffrey Jeturian, Lupita Aquino-Kashiwahara and Butch Perez.

Below are the following films that will be made available on the streaming platform:

Lupita Aquino Kashiwahara’s ‘Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo’ (1976)

Touching on American imperialism, the film narrates the story of a young nurse (Nora Aunor) who begins questioning her planned emigration to the United States following her brother’s fatal shooting.

The film received multiple awards at the 1976 Metro Manila Film Festival and the 1977 FAMAS Awards.

Ishmael Bernal’s ‘Nunal sa Tubig’ (1976)

The 1976 drama film features a love triangle in an impoverished village that involves ferry owner Benjamin (George Estregan) and two women in the village — Chedeng (Daria Ramirez) and Maria (Elizabeth Oropesa).

The film won the 1977 Catholic Mass Media Awards and the 1977 Gawad Urian.

Lino Brocka’s ‘Cain at Abel’ (1982)

The film follows two brothers and their mother, Señora Pina, who shows favoritism toward her younger son Ellis (Christopher de Leon) over the older Lorenzo (Phillip Salvador). Eventually, the brewing sibling rivalry became violent.

Cain at Abel was the first Filipino film entry to the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain in the same year. It also earned accolades in multiple award-giving bodies including the 1983 FAP Awards, 1983 FAMAS Awards and the 1983 Gawad Urian.

Butch Perez’s ‘Haplos’ (1982)

The film revolves around Al (Christopher de Leon), who returns to his hometown after his mother’s death. He gets involved with two women: his childhood friend and a mysterious woman who tends his mother’s grave.

Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s ‘Karnal’ (1983)

Karnal is the concluding film in the feminist trilogy (Brutal and Moral as the first two films), which was adapted and written by Ricky Lee.

The story revolves around a newly wedded couple, Narcing (Philip Salvador) and Puring (Cecille Castillo), whose lives change after a series of misfortunes and revelations.

It was recognized at the Metro Manila Film Festival 1983, Gawad Urian 1984, FAP Awards 1984 and FAMAS Awards, 1984.

Jeffrey Jeturian’s ‘Ekstra’ (2013)

Ekstra is a socio-realist drama comedy film about exploitation and marginalized workers. The film centers around Loida Malabanan (Vilma Santos), an extra who goes through another shooting day for a soap opera.

For this film, Santos garnered the best actress award at the Dhaka International Film Festival and Golden Screen Awards.
