DepEd defers to WB study on teachers’ pay hike

DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa

The Department of Education is consulting the World Bank to determine how much salary increase should public school teachers get.

DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa said in a Viber message on Thursday that the agency already engaged the World Bank to study the ideal percentage of teachers’ salary increases for the coming years before the Makabayan bloc filed a House bill increasing teachers’ monthly pay to P50,000.

Poa said they are still waiting for the study from the World Bank.

“We are expecting preliminary results from the World Bank in a few weeks. They are just requesting for additional data from DepEd which we are now processing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Poa said DepEd will be participating in the Congressional deliberations for the said bill.

“We want to be equipped with the study or at least preliminary findings of the World Bank when we go to the deliberations,” he said, adding that it will be the agency’s basis for its position.
