As the world slowly recovers from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic — and while there is still a long way to go for healing and finding resolutions on the ongoing conflicts and economic downturns — a woman stands tall as she asserts her ground and finds her voice.
Global superstar and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift was declared Time magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year on 6 December, shortly after being named Forbes’ fifth Most Powerful Woman in the World and Spotify’s most-streamed artist globally.
Swift, who became a popular name in the music industry long ago, has found ways to reclaim her name and her rights to her music amid the ongoing pandemic. As she released back-to-back successful albums, it is unsurprising that she has dominated the media due to her highly-successful sold-out Eras Tour and positively impacted millions of people worldwide.
In an interview with Time, Swift recalled her musical journey, along with the growing media attention and public scrutiny she has faced over the years.
“I’ve been raised up and down the flagpole of public opinion so many times in the last 20 years,” Swift said, adding that being considered one of the biggest entertainers in the world is a breakthrough moment in her career that entails a larger responsibility. “And for the first time in my life, I was mentally tough enough to take what comes with that.”
The critically acclaimed pop star, who is celebrating her 10 chart-topping albums through a highly successful world tour and a blockbuster concert film, is now a billionaire and one of the richest self-made women who has positively contributed to the United States economy as her tour proceeds.
With her global impact over the years, the 33-year-old singer-songwriter proved that her music is a powerful medium for narrating her story, and no one should take that away from anyone.
“This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been,” Swift told Time. “Ultimately, we can convolute it all we want, or try to overcomplicate it, but there’s only one question: ‘Are you not entertained?’”
Following the grand achievement, Swift took to social media to express her gratitude for being named Time’s Person of the Year.
“I’m really reflecting on this year, and all the years that led up to it. Can’t say thank you enough times,” the pop star said.
Ranking 79th last year, Swift was accompanied by Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Barbie in this year’s Forbes’ Most Powerful Women lineup.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift joined influential and powerful recipients such environmental activist Greta Thunberg, US President Joe Biden, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the honorable and nearly century-old Person of the Year list.
