American news magazine TIME announced its list of the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence on Thursday, 7 September.
This inaugural TIME100 AI list not only recognizes the current pioneers but also underscores the dynamic nature of AI as it continues to redefine the world.
“What is unique about AI is also what is most feared and celebrated—its ability to match some of our own skills, and then to go further, accomplishing what humans cannot,” TIME Editor in Chief Sam Jacobs said.
The TIME roster showcases leaders, lawmakers, artists, and entrepreneurs from various fields and countries around the world.
It comprises 43 corporate leaders and founders, among them Elon Musk of xAI, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Robin Li of Baidu.
Additionally, it recognizes 41 women and nonbinary individuals, including Human Intelligence CEO Rumman Chowdhury and Google DeepMind COO Lila Ibrahim.
The youngest individual recognized on the TIME100 AI list is 18-year-old Sneha Revanur of Encode Justice, while the oldest is 76-year-old Geoffrey Hinton, a former Google employee considered by many as the “godfather of artificial intelligence”.
Other notable figures on this prestigious list include writer Ted Chiang, singer Grimes, Japanese manga creator Rootport, US Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, and Professor Fei-Fei Li of Stanford University, among others.
“Reporting on people and influence is what TIME does best. That led us to the TIME100 AI,” Jacobs added.
TIME’s thorough categorization of these influential figures into Leaders, Innovators, Shapers, and Thinkers provides a comprehensive view of the AI ecosystem.
