Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Abad, a distinguished figure in Philippine arts and academe, passed away on Tuesday, 26 December, at aged 77. His home university, Ateneo de Manila, and its creativity and innovation hub Areté, made the announcement today, 27 December, in an online post.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Artistic Director, Dr. Ricardo G. Abad Ph.D.,” the announcement said.
Abad had a Ph.D. in Sociology from the Fordham University, New York. A professor emeritus of Ateneo, he was a recipient of major awards and recognitions.
His most recent award for theater was the “Natatanging Gintong Parangal bilang Pinakamahusay na Alagad ng Sining ng Teatro”, celebrating his decades-long work with Tanghalang Ateneo, the Ateneo Fine Arts Department, and the recently-opened Areté.
“Dr. Abad was the spirit behind Areté’s development as a cultural institution, devising its artistic programs and presentations. He conceptualized and directed shows like the Noel Concert series, the staging and online release of 2Bayani The Musical, and the Sari-sari pocket presentations to name a few,” Areté said.
“We join the Ateneo and theater communities in mourning the loss of a brilliant teacher, director, actor, and friend,” it added, stating that further details will be released.
