Jo Koy, the popular stand-up comedian behind Live from Seattle and Comin’ in Hot, will host the newly revamped Golden Globes.
On 22 December (Philippine time), the Golden Globe Awards revealed that the Filipino-American comedian will host the 81st edition of the awards ceremony.
“We are thrilled to have Jo host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards and bring his infectious energy and relatable humor to kick off Hollywood’s award season. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for the stars in the room and a global audience,” Golden Globes President Helen Hoehne said in a statement.
Executive-producing showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner also expressed their excitement about working with Jo Koy.
“Jo’s genuine brand of comedy is sure to entertain our honorees in the room at the Beverly Hilton and viewers at home. We are excited to work with him to make this year’s show laugh-out-loud from beginning to end,” they said.
The comedian-actor also unveiled the good news on Instagram through a video clip.
“I’m making this video because I’m super excited to announce that the Golden Globes are in a couple of weeks, and you’re probably wondering who the host is: It’s me!” Jo Koy said in the video clip.
“I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year. This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal kita (Google it)!” he said in a Golden Globes article.
Jo Koy is one of the most widely recognized and acclaimed comedians today. He has appeared in over 140 episodes of Chelsea Lately as a regular guest. He has also guested in The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live and more.
The 52-year-old award-winning actor and comedian is selling out arenas worldwide, including the ongoing “Funny is Funny World Tour.”
Previous personalities who have hosted the Golden Globes include Jerrod Carmichael, Andy Samberg, Sandra Oh, Ricky Gervais and more.
The Golden Globes will be televised live on 8 January (5 p.m. Philippine time).
