OPM is present in a big way in Google’s 2023 Year in Search results, thanks to two trailblazing Filipino artists and their hit songs: Juan Karlos’ “Ere” at number six, and SunKissed Lola’s “Pasilyo” at number nine.
Released in August, “Ere” became the first Filipino song to debut on Spotify’s global chart. It was also the first Filipino song in history to break into the top 100 on the global Spotify chart, ranking 87th with 1.45 million streams and jumping 90 spots from its previous ranking.
The second song from Juan Karlos’s album “Sad Songs and Bullshit Part 1,” “Ere” is said to have been inspired by his breakup with model and beauty queen Maureen Wroblewitz, who was featured in the music video of the singer’s earlier hit “Buwan” in 2018.
Meanwhile, the emerging rock band SunKissed Lola’s popular love song, “Pasilyo,” was released in October 2022 and gained wider popularity this year with over 160 million streams on Spotify.
With these numbers, “Pasilyo” became Spotify Philippines’ most-streamed OPM song in 2023.
At number nine on the Google yearend list, it was even ahead of Jungkook’s smash hit “Seven,” which settled for number 10.
Japanese musical duo Yoasobi topped Google’s most-searched list this year with their song Idol.
Meanwhile, phenomenal K-pop groups BTS and BLACKPINK were honored as the most-searched boy and girl group in Google’s “25 Years in Search: The Most Searched” roundup video on YouTube.
