Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which lured moviegoers across the globe to return to cinemas last summer 2023, led the nominations at the 30th edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The two films tied with four nominations each, while Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon followed with three nominations each.
Cillian Murphy, who played the titular role in Oppenheimer, is in the running for Best Leading Actor alongside Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright.
Margot Robbie, Barbie’s lead star, is nominated for Best Leading Actress alongside Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Carey Mulligan and Emma Stone.
Gladstone recently bagged her first Golden Globe Best Actress Award (Drama category) for Killers of the Flower Moon, while Stone won her second Golden Globe Best Actress Award (Musical or Comedy category) for Poor Things.
Oppenheimer swept the Golden Globes with five awards out of eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Male Actor for a Drama (Murphy), Best Director (Nolan), Best Supporting Male Actor (Downey Jr.) and Best Score (Ludwig Göransson).
Succession led with five SAG nominations in the television category, followed closely by The Bear.
Succession also garnered the most number of awards at the recently concluded Golden Globes, winning Best Drama, Best Actor (Culkin), Best Actress (Snook) and Best Supporting Actor (Matthew Macfadyen).
For this year’s event, veteran actress, singer and director Barbra Streisand will be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. One of the most successful and awarded artists of all time, Streisand starred in, among other iconic films, Funny Girl (1968), The Way We Were (1973) and A Star is Born (1976).
The SAG Awards will take place on 24 February in Los Angeles, California. For the first time, the awards ceremony will be available via streaming on Netflix.
