A new musical is coming this May.
Barefoot Theater Collective announced the stage adaptation of Kip Oebanda’s film Bar Boys (2017)which starred Rocco Nacino, Carlo Aquino, Enzo Pineda and Kean Cipriano.
“Our dreams won’t wait too long. Join us this May 2024 as we bring a new musical to the stage,” BTC wrote on Facebook.
The theater company first revealed its plans for this production in April 2023. The upcoming musical will be adapted and written for stage by Pat Valera of Mula Sa Buwan.
For Bar Boys: The Musical, Sheila Francisco will be playing Justice Hernandez, a role played by Odette Khan in the film. The rest of the cast have yet to be revealed.
Bar Boys tells the story of young men who are aspiring lawyers. Their friendships, romantic and familial relationships are soon tested as they prepare for the Bar Exams.
Bar Boys was released on 16 August 2017 as an official entry for the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. It is produced by TropicFrills Film Productions, in cooperation with Wild Sound Studios, and distributed by Quantum Films. The film was made available on YouTube in March 2020.
Writer-director Erik Matti described Bar Boys as “nostalgic and sentimental,” saying that it reminded him of Mario J. de los Reyes’ Bagets and Jake Tordesillas’ High School Circa ’65.
