The second part of the 2016 Disney classic Moana is set to be released this second half of the year.

Walt Disney Animation announced in a YouTube video that the musical animation will be launched in theaters on 27 November 2024. The sequel to Moana was originally planned to be released as a TV series, but will now come out as a movie.

Based on the teaser’s description, Moana 2 will take on an “expansive new voyage” with Maui, Moana and a new crew of seafarers.

“After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced,” said the film’s synopsis.

The second part of the blockbuster 2016 film will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr., while Grammy winners Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear and Mark Mancina, a three-time Grammy winner, will take care of the film’s music.

According to media outlet Deadline, Dwayne Johnson, who plays the role of a demigod, and Auli’i Cravalho, who plays the sea-faring Disney princess, are still in talks to be the sequel.

Walt Disney chief executive officer Bob Iger has not confirmed if the characters who voiced the roles in 2016’s Moana will return for the sequel.
