International superstar Taylor Swift has postponed the second of three shows in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for The Eras Tour following the death of a fan.

On 18 November, Swift confirmed the death of her fan, Ana Clara Benevides, in an Instagram story.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young,” Swift wrote.

According to organizers and fans who attended the first Brazil show, Benevides, a 23-year-old Swiftie, felt unwell at the venue. She was still transferred to a local hospital but died an hour later.

Eventually, the Brazilian newspaper Fohla De Sao Paolo reported that Benevides’ cause of death was cardiorespiratory arrest.

Temperatures reached almost 100 degrees or 39.1 °C at the time of the incident due to the dangerous heatwave sweeping across Brazil.

The 33-year-old popstar wrote that she was not able to speak about Benevides’ death on stage due to “overwhelming guilt.”

“I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” she wrote.

Attendees claimed that they were prohibited from bringing their own water bottles to the Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos stadium.

Still, the popular singer-songwriter was able to pause her concert from time to time to ask officials to hand out water to fans.

With the ongoing heatwave in Brazil, Swift has made the heartbreaking decision to postpone her Saturday show for the safety and well-being of all her fans, performers and crew.

“I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio. The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers and crew has to and always will come first,” she said.

Her third show in Rio, which was not postponed, would be her last performance before heading to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for three additional performances.

Taylor Swift is currently touring globally for The Eras Tour, which began on 17 March this year. The ongoing tour, which pays homage to all her albums, is set to conclude on 8 December 2024.
