T here is no such thing as a quick detox for anything. It takes a lifestyle change to make it happen.
Sure, you can research what is out there on social media. But learn with caution. Then, seek professional medical advice. On the other hand, the information that is available out there might be well-intentioned. So, here is what I have gathered in the many years I have interviewed doctors on radio and television.
Understanding the kidneys
Everyone is born with two kidneys, although a human being can live on one kidney. This is the reason why a person is able to donate a kidney for organ transplant.
The job of the kidneys is to filter the blood of toxins and excess water. What can damage the kidneys are poor diet, high blood pressure and diabetes. They are called lifestyle diseases. Thus, if it is a lifestyle illness then it can be prevented by adjusting and correcting one’s lifestyle choices and habits.
Top suggestions
1. Diet. Eat a balanced diet. You may consider the Mediterranean eating plan. This includes a healthy balance of vegetables, protein and carbohydrates.
Top food and beverage choices:
Water: Take two to three liters in a span of 10 hours.
Coconut water
Veggies/Fruits: Bananas, berries, strawberries, lemon, apples, carrots, spinach, kale, celery and cilantro. You may also juice these daily.
Lemon water: Mix the juice of 1/4 wedge of lemon in lukewarm water and drink on an empty stomach. Take it daily in the morning before breakfast.
2. Exercise. Good blood circulation is ensured when you exercise. This helps in the cleansing process.
3. Manage your sodium intake. Do not take regular table salt. If you must have salt, choose sea salt which contains minerals.
4. Manage your blood pressure.
5.Manage your sugar and carbohydrate intake to prevent diabetes.
6. Maintain your normal weight. If you need to lose weight, embark on a weight loss program.
7. Maintain your serenity. A calm state of mind affects the body in a positive way. By doing so, you do not have a problem with too much of stress hormones like adrenaline or cortisol in the body.
8. Sleep. Adequate quality of sleep recharges the body properly.
