The 75th Primetime Emmys, which was delayed for four months due to the Hollywood writers’ strike, finally happened on 15 January 2024 (16 January in Manila) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, with American actor and comedian Anthony Anderson as host.
The HBO black comedy-drama Succession and the Netflix TV series Beef were the big winners of the night, ending up with six wins each.
Succession won a trifecta of acting honors: Matthew Macfadyen for Outstanding Support Actor in a Drama Series, Kieran Culkin for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Sarah Snook for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Succession screenwriter Jesse Armstrong bagged the trophy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, specifically for the episode “Connor’s Wedding.” The award was Armstrong’s fourth in the Emmys.
Beef won for its stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeung the Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor in a Limited Series, respectively. Both Wong and Yeun are first-time Emmy winners.
Rock icon Elton John’s win, for Outstanding Variety Special for his concert Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, made him the latest EGOT artist — just the 19th person to win the four top awards in the entertainment business (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony).
The Emmys also paid tribute to the late Matthew Perry, with the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There For You” played during the ceremony. The much-loved Perry died on 28 October 2023 after a long battle with drugs and alcoholism.
