2 decades later, ‘Jewel in the Palace’ gets a sequel

Fans of the classic Korean period drama Jewel in the Palace (also known as “Dae Jang Geum”) are in for a nostalgic treat as lead actress Lee Young Ae steps back into the shoes of the beloved character, Dae Jang Geum.

The hit series, which captured hearts back in 2003, is set to make a comeback with a sequel titled Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum.

Fantagio confirmed the news on 30 January, revealing that the blockbuster historical drama is gearing up for filming in October. Lee Young Ae, cast for the lead role in June last year, recently signed the contract with the drama scriptwriter.

The sequel will explore Jang Geum’s journey as she evolves into a unyeo (female physician), picking up from where the original series left off. With 2024 marking the 20th anniversary of the iconic drama, the first filming this year holds special significance.

“Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” aims to air early next year.

Jewel in the Palace told the tale of Jang Geum, a kitchen cook at the royal palace who rises to become the King’s first female physician. The series showcased her triumph over social discrimination in a male-dominated and hierarchical royal court.

A cultural phenomenon, the drama contributed to the global spread of Hallyu (Korean wave) and garnered immense popularity for Korean culture worldwide.
